Sherrills of Indiana

As you might expect, during the westward expansion of the colonial period and early days of the United States, some Sherrill families moved beyond the confines of the Catawba River Valley. Here is a report on some of them who moved to Indiana.

I am aware of at least two Sherrill branches that went to Indiana: descendents of Adam's son, Aquilla, and descendents of Babel Sherrill, Adam's great grandson.

Aquilla Sherrill moved to east Tennessee about 1775. His son Isaac had a son, Jonathan, who moved to Kentucky and later to south-central Indiana with his wife Sarah (Sally) Yates probably in the 1820s.

Meanwhile back in North Carolina, Jonathan's second cousin, Babel Sherrill, had two sons who moved to Indiana at about the same time. Their names were William and John. Here is the evidence of their passing. William's descendents are buried in the Sherrill Cemetery and John's descendents are buried in the Crawford Cemetery. The cemeteries are less than a mile apart near Bedford, Indiana.

In 1884, Isaac Wesley Sherrill (grave shown below) made a trip to North Carolina to visit his relatives. Click here for a copy of the letter he wrote to his cousin about his trip and the family members he encountered. (This letter has been reprinted in various forms and in various places but I do not know who originally uncovered it.)
