Evidence of Sherrills at East Hampton Long Island, New York

The Sherrill Family of East Hampton is historically significant in that part of Long Island, New York however, these Sherrills are not related to the Sherrills of the Mid-Atlantic region who moved to North Carolina and places beyond. In East Hampton you will find a lot of information about Samuel Sherrill (Shipwrecked Sam) and his decendants. Most of the members of this family line settled in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts or Rhode Island.

Monuments of the South End Burial Ground

The South End Burial Ground is the final resting place of many Sherrills who were descendents of Samuel Sherrill. The Sherrill monument is visible beyond the tree in the upper right center of the photo. Many of the headstones in this picture are of members of the Sherrill and Parsons families.

Table monument to Samuel Sherrill the Settler and Miss Parsons...

The inscription is lengthy and begins in the corner of the stone table.

Sarah Parsons who married Recompence Sherrill

This is Recompence, the son of Sarah Parsons and Recompence Sherrill. This is the grandson of Samuel Sherrill.

Notice the spelling of this headstone. "Sarah Sheriel" nee Sarah Leek, wife of Recompence (previous headstone).

Abraham Sherrill was a grandson of Samuel and brother of Recompence. Many of the older headstone are in this deteriorated condition.

Some of the stones in very poor condition have been replaced by markers like this. However, there has been a problem reading the old headstones. According to other records, this stone should read "AGED 9 MONTHS" not 9 years.

East Hampton History by Jeanette Edwards Rattrey, East Hampton, LI, 1953
Samuel Sherrill - shipwrecked in 1665 (about age 26) - First Sherrill in East Hampton; married a daughter of Samuel Parsons; she died in 1772 (about 80 years old)

Samuel Sherrill born about 1639, perhaps from Cornwall, England

Theory #1:
According to Mary Lura Sherrill (head of Chemistry Dept. at Mt. Holyoke College, 1951) and Lewis Joseph Sherrill of Union Theology Seminary; two sons were born to Samuel Sherrill, 1. Recompence and 2. William

Theory #2:
General Charles Hitchcock Sherrill in a 1932 publication "The Sherrill Genealogy" claims that Samuel Sherrill had only one son; Recompence, and that William is of another Sherrill line who came to ?Canada, going later to the South to join a Southern branch of the family.

C. H. Sherrill states that records in Albany, NY show no evidence of Samuel Sherrill having a son named William.

pg. 36, in 1700 a home owned by Parsons was on Main Street;
pg. 110, Parsons and Sherry (or Sherrill) listed in a group of people who were keepers of the lighthouse at Montauk;
pg. 119, people (before 1822 when Springs Chapel was built) rode ox-carts to attend church at East Hampton. They parked the carts at the north end of the village at the Sherrill home so no one would see them arriving in an ox-cart.
